Lewis<sup>a,b<\/sup>, Corneille Ewango<sup>c<\/sup> , Bart Crezee<sup>a<\/sup>, Ifo Suspense Averti<sup>d<\/sup>  et le consortium CongoPeat<sup>e<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>T\u00e9l\u00e9charger la note d&rsquo;information en format <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2022\/11\/CongoPeat-Briefing_COP27_FR.pdf\">PDF<\/a><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>L&rsquo;IMPORTANCE MONDIALE DES TOURBI\u00c8RES<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>En 2017 nous avons r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que la plus vaste tourbi\u00e8re tropicale au monde se trouve dans le bassin central du Congo<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Notre derni\u00e8re carte publi\u00e9e cette ann\u00e9e montre que la tourbi\u00e8re s&rsquo;\u00e9tend sur 16,8 millions d&rsquo;hectares, dont 11,3 millions d&rsquo;hectares en R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo (RDC) et 5,5 millions d&rsquo;hectares en R\u00e9publique du Congo (R\u00e9p. du Congo)<sup>2<\/sup>. La superficie totale est 15&nbsp;% sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle de notre carte de 2017.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>La quantit\u00e9 de carbone stock\u00e9 dans la tourbe est \u00e9gale \u00e0 celle de tous les arbres \u00e0 travers la totalit\u00e9 du territoire de la R\u00e9p. du Congo et de la RDC, quoique la tourbi\u00e8re ne couvre que 6&nbsp;% de la surface des deux pays.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Les for\u00eats mar\u00e9cageuses sur tourbe sont parmi les paysages forestiers les plus riches en faune du monde o\u00f9 vivent des populations majeures d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phants de for\u00eat, de gorilles des plaines, de bonobos, de chimpanz\u00e9s, de Cercopith\u00e8ques noir et vert et de crocodiles nains.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Aujourd&rsquo;hui, les tourbi\u00e8res sont en grande partie intactes et les populations locales les utilisent de mani\u00e8re durable. Pourtant, le stock de carbone dans la tourbe est sous la menace directe de l&rsquo;exploration et de l&rsquo;exploitation p\u00e9troli\u00e8re, des concessions foresti\u00e8res et de l&rsquo;agriculture industrielle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>De nouvelles analyses publi\u00e9es dans la revue <em>Nature<\/em> montrent que le changement climatique fait peser des risques suppl\u00e9mentaires. Il se peut que de futures s\u00e9cheresses bouleversent l\u2019\u00e9tat actuel de l&rsquo;\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me, et cet important stockeur de carbone se verrait transform\u00e9 en un immense \u00e9metteur, acc\u00e9l\u00e9rant ainsi le changement climatique.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Map-1024x669.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Map-1024x669.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Map-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Map-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Map-350x229.jpg 350w, https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Map.jpg 1051w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Le vert indique la localisation de la plus grande tourbi\u00e8re tropicale au monde dans le bassin central du Congo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Si les tourbi\u00e8res du bassin central du Congo devenaient un immense \u00e9metteur de carbone \u00e0 l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, que ce soit par le drainage ou par les impacts du changement climatique, les engagements internationaux visant \u00e0 limiter le r\u00e9chauffement global \u00e0 1,5&nbsp;\u00b0C seraient mis en p\u00e9ril.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>LES IMPACTS DU CHANGEMENT CLIMATIQUE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>De nouvelles analyses publi\u00e9es dans la revue <em>Nature<\/em> montrent la vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse des tourbi\u00e8res du centre du Congo<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>L&rsquo;\u00e9chantillonnage des carottes de tourbe provenant de la r\u00e9gion met en \u00e9vidence une p\u00e9riode de l\u2019ordre de 5&nbsp;000 ans au cours de laquelle il n&rsquo;y avait quasiment pas d&rsquo;accumulation de tourbe, moins de 0,1&nbsp;mm par an (voir Figure ci-dessous).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Les analyses des restes v\u00e9g\u00e9taux pr\u00e9serv\u00e9s dans la tourbe&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;les cires foliaires et les grains de pollen&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;montrent que les tourbi\u00e8res ont connu un ass\u00e8chement du climat qui a d\u00e9but\u00e9 il y a 5&nbsp;000 ans, en devenant progressivement plus sec jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 il y a environ 2&nbsp;000 ans, avec un recul des esp\u00e8ces v\u00e9g\u00e9tales qui rel\u00e8vent de la for\u00eat mar\u00e9cageuse.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Cette s\u00e9cheresse a abaiss\u00e9 la nappe phr\u00e9atique, entra\u00eenant la d\u00e9composition de la tourbe, avec des pertes de tourbe \u00e9valu\u00e9es entre 2 et 4 m\u00e8tres d&rsquo;une s\u00e9quence tourbeuse qui est aujourd\u2019hui \u00e9paisse de 6 m\u00e8tres. \u00ab&nbsp;L&rsquo;intervalle fant\u00f4me&nbsp;\u00bb qui en a r\u00e9sult\u00e9 se caract\u00e9rise par une tr\u00e8s faible accumulation de tourbe par rapport \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente et ult\u00e9rieure (voir Figure ci-dessous).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>La tourbi\u00e8re est pass\u00e9e du statut de puits de carbone \u00e0 celui de source de carbone \u00e0 mesure que la tourbe s&rsquo;est d\u00e9compos\u00e9e. Cette d\u00e9composition s&rsquo;est poursuivie jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 la fin de la s\u00e9cheresse il y a environ 2&nbsp;000 ans, et ce n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que l&rsquo;accumulation de la tourbe a red\u00e9marr\u00e9.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>L&rsquo;\u00e9tude est un avertissement du pass\u00e9&nbsp;: si les tourbi\u00e8res s&rsquo;ass\u00e8chent au-del\u00e0 d&rsquo;un certain seuil, elles lib\u00e9reront du carbone \u00e0 l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, acc\u00e9l\u00e9rant par la suite le changement climatique futur.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Quant au climat actuel, certains enregistrements indiquent que les saisons s\u00e8ches s&rsquo;allongent dans le bassin du Congo. Les derniers mod\u00e8les climatiques, quoique incertains, sugg\u00e8rent une probabilit\u00e9 croissante de conditions de s\u00e9cheresse extr\u00eame dans cette r\u00e9gion<sup>4<\/sup>. Cela met en valeur la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00e9viter toute autre perturbation qui entra\u00eene l&rsquo;ass\u00e8chement des tourbi\u00e8res telle que le drainage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Notre \u00e9tude t\u00e9moigne que des conditions plus s\u00e8ches ont exist\u00e9 dans le pass\u00e9 et elles ont pouss\u00e9 les tourbi\u00e8res au-del\u00e0 d&rsquo;un point de bascule, les transformant en une source de carbone en direction de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne pourrait se reproduire \u00e0 l&rsquo;avenir si les \u00e9pisodes de s\u00e9cheresse augmentent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Les tourbi\u00e8res du centre du Congo stockent 29 milliards de tonnes de carbone. Si un relargage de ce carbone se produit, m\u00eame lentement, il sera plus difficile d&rsquo;atteindre l&rsquo;Accord de Paris.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Plus vite les \u00e9missions anthropiques de carbone seront r\u00e9duites \u00e0 la neutralit\u00e9 carbone, plus faible sera la probabilit\u00e9 que les tourbi\u00e8res du Congo franchissent un point de bascule provoqu\u00e9 par la s\u00e9cheresse.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2022\/11\/Garcin-age-and-peat-depth.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2722\" width=\"651\" height=\"597\" \/><figcaption>\u00c2ge et \u00e9paisseur d&rsquo;une carotte extraite de la tourbi\u00e8re du centre du Congo. Les conditions plus s\u00e8ches ont conduit \u00e0 la d\u00e9composition de la tourbe, y compris la perte de la tourbe datant d\u2019avant le d\u00e9but de la s\u00e9cheresse (d\u2019apr\u00e8s Garcin <em>et al.<\/em> 2022, <em>Nature<\/em>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><span><strong style=\"font-weight: bold\">LES IMPACTS DIRECTS SUR LES TOURBI<\/strong><b>\u00c8RES : L&rsquo;EXPLORATION P<\/b><strong style=\"font-weight: bold\">\u00c9<\/strong><b>TROLI<\/b><strong style=\"font-weight: bold\">\u00c8<\/strong><b>RE ET L&rsquo;EXPLOITATION FORESTI<\/b><strong style=\"font-weight: bold\">\u00c8<\/strong><\/span><strong>RE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Quoique les tourbi\u00e8res soient en grande partie intactes et g\u00e9r\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re durable par les populations locales \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle, la superposition de notre carte des tourbi\u00e8res sur des zones de concessions foresti\u00e8res et d&rsquo;agriculture industrielle montre que l&rsquo;huile de palme (remplissage rouge) menace les tourbi\u00e8res de la R\u00e9p. du Congo et les concessions d&rsquo;exploitation foresti\u00e8re (contour rouge) menacent les tourbi\u00e8res de la RDC.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Concessions.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Concessions.jpg 680w, https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Concessions-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/congopeat.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2021\/11\/Concessions-350x272.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Sur notre carte des tourbi\u00e8res sont trac\u00e9s les 27 blocs p\u00e9troliers propos\u00e9s pour la vente aux ench\u00e8res en RDC, montrant qu\u2019un million d\u2019hectares de tourbi\u00e8res se situent \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de trois blocs p\u00e9troliers. L&rsquo;exploration p\u00e9troli\u00e8re ouvre de nouvelles routes d&rsquo;acc\u00e8s aux for\u00eats et aux tourbi\u00e8res, ce qui am\u00e8ne habituellement \u00e0 la d\u00e9gradation de l&rsquo;\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me et \u00e0 la d\u00e9forestation dues \u00e0 la chasse, \u00e0 l&rsquo;exploitation foresti\u00e8re et \u00e0 l&rsquo;expansion de l&rsquo;agriculture, que des gisements p\u00e9troliers soient trouv\u00e9s ou non<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>1,6 milliards de tonnes de carbone sont stock\u00e9es dans la tourbe \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des trois blocs p\u00e9troliers. Les blocs 4, 4B et 22 contiennent de la tourbe<sup>6<\/sup>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>LES TOURBI\u00c8RES SONT EXTR\u00caMEMENT SENSIBLES AUX CHANGEMENTS ENVIRONNEMENTAUX<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Nos recherches ont montr\u00e9 qu&rsquo;il y a 5&nbsp;000 \u00e0 2&nbsp;000 ans, d&rsquo;importantes quantit\u00e9s de tourbe se sont d\u00e9compos\u00e9es, \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 le climat s&rsquo;est ass\u00e9ch\u00e9 au-del\u00e0 d&rsquo;un seuil. Il est probable que d&rsquo;autres types de changement auront un impact sur les tourbi\u00e8res.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Les photos ci-contre montrent la construction d&rsquo;une route d&rsquo;acc\u00e8s \u00e0 un campement d&rsquo;exploitation foresti\u00e8re, qui a modifi\u00e9 le drainage de la tourbi\u00e8re et tu\u00e9 tous les arbres, le tout en moins de deux d\u00e9cennies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Plus grave encore serait le drainage planifi\u00e9 \u00e0 des fins agricoles. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne s&rsquo;est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9 dans les tourbi\u00e8res tropicales d&rsquo;Asie du Sud-Est, entra\u00eenant des incendies incontr\u00f4lables pendant les ann\u00e9es de s\u00e9cheresse, ainsi que la d\u00e9composition de la tourbe, et l&rsquo;\u00e9mission d&rsquo;une quantit\u00e9 de carbone suffisante pour \u00eatre d\u00e9tect\u00e9e dans les niveaux de dioxyde de carbone dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re. Qu&rsquo;elles soient confront\u00e9es aux effets du changement climatique, du d\u00e9veloppement p\u00e9trolier, de l&rsquo;exploitation foresti\u00e8re ou de l&rsquo;agriculture industrielle, il faudra mettre le syst\u00e8me tourbeux \u00e0 l&rsquo;abri de bouleversements irr\u00e9versibles.
